Glaucoma
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which can lead
to vision loss. Typically, peripheral vision is lost first.
Rarely are there any symptoms until vision loss is advanced.
The major risk factor for glaucoma is high eye pressure.
Other risk factors include age, family history, thin corneas,
steroid use, and trauma.
Glaucoma care
The treatment of glaucoma is deceptively complex.
Knowing whom to treat, when to treat, whether to treat,
and how to treat can involve a complex decision-making
process. There is no substitute for an experienced
physician to guide the patient through the decision-making
process.
Experienced physicians
All of our doctors have years of experience treating
glaucoma. In addition, Dr. Shaw completed a three-year
glaucoma research fellowship at UC San Diego.
We pride ourselves in taking the time to explain your
condition in such a way that you are comfortable with
our plan for either treatment or observation.
Modern technology
Treating glaucoma takes a mixture of old-fashioned
experience and judgment, as well as modern resources.
Our office has modern imaging technology, rapid visual
field testing, and access to modern treatments such as
selective laser trabeculoplasty, as well as knowledge of
the latest medications
